The Kildare Novice Road Championships were hosted by Newbridge AC on Sunday February 21st. The races took place on the triangle of the Curragh and was well attended and supported despite the wet and blustery conditions.
Thanks to new club members coming through from the Fit for Life section of the club Newbridge AC had three mens teams and two womens teams entered. This is a so encouraging to see especially in comparison to last year where we were unable to field a full women’s team. The dedication of all our athletes is to be commended, from those who have been training for years to those who have only taken up running in the last year. It’s an exciting time for the club with plenty more days like this to come in the future.

The first race was the womens 3000m where Olivia Archbold ran a strong and smart race from the start to finish 3rd overall. She was followed by Marion Gannon-Kelly in 5th, Maria Tansey 12th, Fiona Wilmott 13th, Lisa McGann 15th, Maria Wilmott 16th, Claire Doyle 17th, Siobhan Farrell 18th, Alison Redmond 19th, Karen Tooher 21st, Laura Vaughan 22nd and Lynda McNulty 23rd.

The ladies Novice A team of Olivia Archbold, Marion Gannon-Kelly, Lisa McGann and Siobhan Farrell took bronze in the team competition.
In the mens 5000m race Conor Tiernan made an impressive debut for the club to finish 3rd overall….a fantastic result in this strong field. This wasn’t the only good showing with Ken Heffernan in great form in 7th and newcomer Michael Browne in 8th followed by David McDonnell 12th, Martin Dowling 13th, Larry McCormack 17th, Vincent McCormack 20th, Pat Moore 23rd, Barry Keogh 27th, Eric Boland 29th, Ciaran Bannon 36th, Paul McGivern 37th, Gerry Rowley 38th, Jerry Delaney 39th, David Feeney 40th, John Cahill 42nd, Paul Nolan 43rd Eamonn Timmons 44th and Shane Geraghty 45th.

The mens A team of Conor Tiernan, Michael Browne, David McDonnell and Martin Dowling claimed the silver medal in the team event.

Many thanks to Caroline Morrissey and all of the Newbridge AC Fit for Life crew who manned the refreshments tables so everyone could warm up from the inside out back at the Curragh Sports Pavilion.

A huge thank you to the officials who marked the course and tidied the course, those who helped direct the races and to the Defence Forces for allowing us to use their facilities.

Thanks to all the athletes and officials that travelled – we look forward to welcoming you back again to Newbridge at future events. Thanks to all the athletes and their families for participating and supporting so enthusiastically. Thanks to Cohlin Donovan for providing such great race photography.
